Singer Sharon Jones, 60, Dies

Soul singer Sharon Jones, lead singer of the group The Dap-Kings, has died, her publicist announced late Friday. She was 60.

She’d been fighting pancreatic cancer since 2013, when she took a break from touring to undergo extensive surgery and chemotherapy, Fresh Air wrote earlier this year. The cancer went into remission, but returned this year.

She told Terry Gross about the difficulty of her treatment:

“I couldn’t sing. I couldn’t get air because, people didn’t realize, I was cut across the diaphragm, all the way up from right under the center under my breasts, all the way down to the top of my navel, almost.”

Even after she returned to the stage, she told Terry, she didn’t feel like the band’s dynamic performances were the same.

“That energy, I mean, everyone said my energy was great, but I didn’t feel it at all. Even now, the days on the stage I’m just not myself, I don’t have that energy. The legs doesn’t lift up like I want to with the pain, the neuropathy from certain chemo. It’s a hinder, but I do the shows, but it’s not the same.”

Jones went through treatment again this year while continuing to perform, but the band had to cancel a European tour this past summer because of a medical procedure Jones needed.

Jones grew up the youngest of six children in Jim Crow-era Georgia, NPR’s Mandalit Del Barco reports on All Things Considered. And even after she moved to Brooklyn, she continued to confront prejudice while trying to make it in the music business. She was told she was “too short,” “too black” and “too fat,” she told Terry.

The White Stripes reunite to condemn Donald Trump

The White Stripes have reunited to publicly condemn Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

The band’s song ‘Seven Nation Army’ was used in a promotional video for Donald Trump, which led Jack and Meg White to issue a rare joint statement.

Spiking in a statement issued through Third Man Records, the band said: “Regarding the use of ‘Seven Nation Army’ in a Donald Trump campaign video, The White Stripes would like to unequivocally state that they have nothing whatsoever to do with this video. They are disgusted by this association, and by the illegal use of their song.”

The White Stripes have reunited to publicly condemn Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

The band’s song ‘Seven Nation Army’ was used in a promotional video for Donald Trump, which led Jack and Meg White to issue a rare joint statement.

Speaking in a statement issued through Third Man Records, the band said: “Regarding the use of ‘Seven Nation Army’ in a Donald Trump campaign video, The White Stripes would like to unequivocally state that they have nothing whatsoever to do with this video. They are disgusted by this association, and by the illegal use of their song.”

It’s unclear exactly which ad The White Stripes are referencing; a fan-made video soundtracked by ‘Seven Nation Army’ went viral over the summer, but it was not made by Trump’s campaign.

Other artists have also condemned Donald Trump; most recently, ex-Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters slammed Donald Trump at a Mexico concert whilst Green Day changed their lyrics to ‘Holiday’ to slam ‘white supremacist’ Donald Trump.

Alec Baldwin and Margot Robbie recently imitated Donald Trump and Ivanka Trump on ‘SNL’ during its season 42 premiere.

Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie hosted the long-running NBC variety show and impersonated Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump for a Celebrity Family Feud comedy sketch which also starred Larry David as Bernie Sanders.

Jagwar Ma Release New Song “Slipping”

As the release of Jagwar Ma’s new album comes to an a near, the band releases the song “Slipping” to get their audience excited. “Slipping” is the eight track featured in the album Every Now & Then, that is releasing on October 14th.

When giving details about the song, the band had said “This song started with an 808 kick drum and some chords I stacked and layered using an Oberheim 2 Voice. Gab added these dreaming vocals over it and pretty soon we had the song. It’s positioned in the sequence as one of the turning points of the album, it’s where things start to lock in and drop to a deeper dreamier world.” This approach taken by the band gives off a contrast when put next to the other two released songs, “O B 1″ and “Give Me A Reason”. Over the sounds of the electronic beats, the vocals of the singer give off a slight echo effect, making the atmosphere calm.

The song could be listened to below.

Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker’s Old Band Mink Mussel Creek Reunite

Mink Mussel Creek, the psych-rock project of Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker, former Tame Impala member and Pond frontman Nicholas Allbrook, and Pond member Shiny Joe Ryan, have reunited. The band originally formed in Perth in the early 2000s, issuing one album, Mink Mussel Manticore, in 2014. Over the weekend, Parker uploaded a photo of the band in rehearsals on the Tame Impala Instagram account, with the caption, “Gettin the band back together.” Pitchfork has learned that Mink Mussel Creek are rehearsing for a to-be-announced one-off show.

Listen to Thurston Moore’s New Track for Chelsea Manning, “Chelsea’s Kiss”

Thurston Moore

Yesterday, it was revealed that Thurston Moore is releasing a new single to support the campaign to free U.S. Army Prvt. Chelsea Manning. Today, Moore has shared the A-side to the single, which is out October 8 via Blank Editions as part of Cassette Store Day. Listen to “Chelsea’s Kiss” below. Manning was sentenced to 35 years in military prison for sharing information on WikiLeaks. Among that information was video of a U.S. helicopter attack that killed a dozen Iraqis, as well as uninvestigated reports of casualties, torture, and corporate interest in international diplomacy. Partial proceeds will go to the Chelsea Manning Support Network.

In the song, Moore refers to “orders too gruesome to carry out.” In the final verse, he sings: “Security breacher, angel baby/Punk princess, take reign on me/The queen, king, first transgender ruler/The royal highness of my majesty … Cure for evilness, Chelsea’s Kiss.”
